Rookie movers panic for good reason — shady movers are real. Some ghost you on moving day, hold your stuff hostage for more cash, or break everything with no refund.
Take it from me — after 11+ years working moves big and small, I’ve seen what happens when customers don’t know what to look for.
That’s why I break down exactly how to spot a legit moving crew and rookie-proof your stuff from scams — plus I give you my complete step-by-step plan inside my Smooth Move Blueprint so you never have to stress about shady movers again.

Don’t just glance at the stars. Read the recent bad reviews. Multiple people complaining about hidden fees, damaged stuff, or ghosting? Rookie red flag.
A pro moving company will do a walkthrough or virtual survey and give you a written estimate. If they don’t? Expect surprise charges later — total rookie mistake.
Legit movers are licensed and insured. For long-distance, look up their USDOT number. No license? Nope.

Good movers ask for a small deposit — not the whole bill before they lift a box. Huge deposits upfront are a classic scam sign. Also some may not ask at all for a deposit until the job is complete.
✨ Cash-only = shady. Pay with a credit card for protection if something goes wrong. Another huge tip because you are awesome, If you do decide to use a credit card to move I highly recommend using American Express. Why?
If a shady mover charges you, American Express does not play they will Refund you, this way you know you have a piece of mind.
Sure you can use a Debit card but… going through those hoops with the banks for disputes may take weeks or months. So Protect yourself ahead of time.
✨ Finding good movers is smart — but even the best movers can’t save you if you pack wrong, scratch walls, or waste time.
