How to Protect Floors When Moving (Save Your Deposit!)

Moving day is stressful enoughthe last thing you need is a huge scratch on the hardwood that costs you your security deposit. 😬

Protecting your floors when moving heavy furniture isn’t hard, but rookie mistakes make it way more expensive than it should be.

🛋️ 1. Use Furniture Sliders or Blankets

Always slide, don’t drag. Use furniture sliders for couches, beds, and dressers. No sliders? Lay down old blankets or towels under furniture legs — they’ll glide across the floor instead of scratching it up.

🏠 2. Lay Down Cardboard or Floor Runners

Cover high-traffic paths with cardboard, old rugs, or floor runners. This keeps dirt, moisture, and sharp debris from grinding into your floor while you move boxes in and out.

🚫 3. Lift Carefully — Don’t Drag!

Rookie mistake: dragging heavy stuff just because it’s “easier.” One bad drag = gouge in the wood, dents in vinyl, or a cracked tile. Always lift with a buddy — and use dollies with rubber wheels for heavy stuff.

🧹 4. Clean as You Go

Dust and grit are your enemy — sweep or vacuum before you start moving. Little rocks stuck under boxes can leave scratches nobody wants to pay for.
